Traditional houses or Machiyas as more commonly known in japan are two-story houses which served as both residence and place of commerce for merchants and craftsmen. The symbolic architecture that defines the traditional townscape of Kyoto, the Machiya originated as early as 794 AD during the Heian period, evolving over time and history to reflect the lifestyles, generations, and culture of Kyoto. Having kept its traditional townscape, Kyoto's machiya continue to captivate people's hearts today.
At Traditional House Kyoto, we are striving to preserve the beautiful history of machiya that has been passed on from antiquity, while providing a way for people to enjoy the experience of staying in a traditional building.Read more:

Our first experience organising accommodation through Airbnb. We found the booking process very easy and the hosts communicated information to us prior to arrival re the location of the property, how to get there, how to access it etc. Our host organised to meet us outside the property and took the time to show us the amenities and provide us with very helpful information about the location and how to get around and see the sights. This was invaluable to us and saved a heap of time working things out for ourselves. The property is about a 20 min bus ride from Kyoto station, is off set back from the main road, very secure and very peaceful. All the transport links, bus and train were within 5 to 10 mins walking distance. 24 hour supermarkets are within a 5 min walk and there are more places to eat than you can poke a stick at. The property itself was superb, it had been renovated recently and provided modern facilities, stove, washing machine, fridge modern bathroom etc, but maintained that true Japanese look and feel. loved the heated floors of a morning as well as the little Japanese garden we could view from the living room. Thank you to our hosts for providing such a beautiful place to stay in Kyoto, so do yourself a favour and book the property if your staying there.
"The location was absolutely great, which is convenient to access both to public bus and train and in a walking distance to many 'must visit & must see' locations for tourists. Great Hospitality and warm welcome by the host (Isabelle♪) who made sure for us to go through the house system and equipment usage with her. Very nicely renovated and equipped with kitchenware and washing machine, which gave us a feeling of 'machiya' life and helped us to come home with no laundry(!) It is wonderfully quiet place with very pretty 'Tsuboniwa' in the back. This is 'must' stay Machiya if you come to Kyoto. We will definitely come back! :-)"
"Our stay in Kyoto was the best from our trip to Japan, and that was mainly because Rouviere and her very loving place. The house is even better than described. The little zen garden and meditation room, loved it! And has a good location. As a host, Rouviere was incredible! She gave us excellent tips to move around the city, and she even took us an excellent dinner and drinks on our first day. So everything was perfect and so exceeded from the expectations! If you go to Kyoto, this is the place to stay :)."
"I must say if you are in Kyoto, this is a must place to stay as it's a traditional Machiya house which can be hard to rent for a whole house anywhere. The interior is fully renovated with fully equipped kitchenware so it's good for those who prefer slow travel to take it slow and to do a bit of cooking. It's also situated next to a shrine and a 24 hours supermarket and few convenient stores, a big bonus for family. All my travels in Japan, this house is probably the only house I slept better as it has this relax zen feel, who would have thought a French can make my experience to stay in Japan more Japanese than actual Japanese:) As it's situated in shijo dori, so not far to the heritage sites and heart of Kyoto, not to mention extremely close to get on public transport to Arashiyama. The host Rouviere is actually a friendly funny guy when met and very helpful to make sure we understand how to get through things in house as well as giving suggestion on place to go in surrounding areas. I will definitely come back again...but hopefully you all don't book out dates for me to come back :P"
Rouviere & Isabelle are great hosts indeed. They always answered my messages very quickly and offered me a great deal of useful information. Isabelle was kind enough to come out to pick me up in the bus station, and she let me to look around the house and explained how to use it. The house is perfectly suits 2 persons (may be a bit small for 4 adults). The traditional Japanese style house and modern facilities are well mixed and balanced. The kitchen with modern facilities is perfectly equipped so that you can easily prepare your own meal. The living room facing the indoor garden is very lovely. The bathroom has a modern bath tub and a washing machine, and is also fully equipped. There was also a dryer which helped me a lot to dry my laundry. Bedrooms are in the second floor with traditional futons, and they were very comfortable. And there's another toilet in the 2nd floor too, which is very convenient to use. And a separate reading room on the 2nd floor was really cozy and bright. All rooms has separate air conditioners, perfectly clean and neat. All furnitures are comfortably designed and arranged. The house is located in quiet area without many tourists, which I loved a lot. It's not that close to famous spots, but you can take buses in front of the house, or walk to Omiya station (7 min). It was such a pleasant time and I would love to stay in this house again.
My family loved this house, it is nicely located in a quiet neighbourhood yet it's so near to the subways as well as JR stations. We could even walk to the major shopping areas and it's a delightful walk in the morning. Coming from Kyoto Station is not a problem too as you could just catch a taxi and it's just a few minutes away. Overall highly accessible and convenient for travelling around Kyoto. We can see that the hosts put in a lot of effort to transform a traditional Machiya into a comfortable guesthouse, it was really nice and warm despite the cold outside, and living in this traditional house was a very enlightening experience. The living area is small though, and don't expect to do much cooking in the house. We had some initial problems in checking in as well as the problems with the cleaning of the house, but the hosts were truly helpful and resolved it quickly. Highly recommended to stay for those who like to stay away from large crowds and live amongst the people!
We are a French couple, who live between Singapore and Kyoto. We embark on the adventure of renovating this machi-ya in 2014 because we love Kyoto and the machiyas. We would like to share our passion with our guests and make you love Kyoto too.
We really want you to have a comfortable stay. We also were tourists staying in machiya so we renovated this one so that you are not cold in winter and not too hot in summer, have modern facilities, close to 24-h supermarkets and eateries but also a real kitchen if you want to cook properly. We are friendly and will be staying in Kyoto in our own machiya (you are welcome to visit) only 10mn walk away in case you have an issue - we will there in no time. We hope to see you in Kyoto.
Falling in love all over again in Kyoto,
Rouviere and Isabelle
